Community Cultivator Job Description

About the Role

This role is about helping members connect with each other and stay informed about what’s happening at Cowork Frederick. To be successful, you’ll need a solid understanding of Cowork Frederick’s culture and values, and also of our members, so your first week will be spent becoming familiar all that, and learning how to use the tools you’ll need. You’ll then start generating content that, after being reviewed and edited, will be published. You’ll get direct feedback on all your work so you can perfect it over time.

This job is defined more loosely than many others. We’re hoping that appeals to you. You will be responsible for completing certain operational tasks (see below). The rest is up to you. We want you to bring ideas to us and, if we agree, to put them into action. Like any member of our community, you’ll get out of this what you put into it.

This is a permanent part-time position (15-20 hours a week), that could grow into a full-time position. We welcome freelancers and small biz owners who want to pursue their own thing in addition to working for us. You’ll have full-time access to Cowork Frederick and all our events. We encourage you to tap into the resources and community. You’ll have a flexible work schedule and will be largely self-managed (with guidance on priority). You’ll try new things, own your successes, learn from mistakes, and improve. You’ll do it with our support every step of the way.

About You

If this is you, we definitely should talk. Are you:

  • A self-starter? We’re looking for someone who will to look for things that need doing and do them, someone who will spot problems and find ways to fix them.
  • A people person? Your days will be filled with meeting people, learning about them, welcoming them into our community and helping them get comfortable. You’ll be a go-to person when others have ideas or questions. You’ll give visitors and new members tours and help them get acquainted and acclimated.
  • Organized? Your role will include routine tasks, but much of what you do will be driven by objectives you establish. You need to be able to plan and manage your own schedule around those objectives while also dealing with impromptu tasks and unexpected challenges.
  • Creative? In this role, you’ll create a lot of things: graphics, posters, signs, processes, maybe event events. You don’t have to be specifically trained or have proven expertise in any of them. We’re just looking for someone who likes creating things and/or is naturally creative.
  • A good communicator? Much of your role will involve talking with people, listening, understanding, and then working with them to put good ideas into action. You’ll also help people connect, spread the word about events and ways to engage. Strong written and spoken communication skills are essential.
  • Resilient? Together, we will try many new things. Some will work and some won’t. Every day will come with unique opportunities and challenges. It’s important that you know how to get back into the game, taking what you’ve learned about what didn’t work to do better.

Routine Tasks

In addition to projects we define together (hopefully based on your good input), you’ll be asked to complete routine tasks. Those tasks are likely to evolve over time. This list should give you a sense of the type of routine work you’ll be asked to do:

  • Create graphics for posters, Slack posts, and member news emails
  • Post events on the Cowork Frederick website, in Facebook, and in Slack
  • Create and print event posters
  • Create member profiles in the Cowork Frederick website
  • Update Cowork Frederick member info in Mailchimp
  • Write content for our weekly member news emails
  • Write monthly “Member Spotlight” blog posts
  • Write weekly “Member News” emails
  • Research news about Cowork Frederick members for weekly social media posts and member news
  • Greet Day Pass visitors and help them get settled and give tours of the space
  • Assist with routine operational tasks (restocking soft drinks, taking out trash, light cleaning, etc.)

Job Requirements

Our requirements are simple and (note) do not include any tool or technical skills or specific experience.

  • 15-20 hours a week (on site), between the hours of 9am and 6pm, on a schedule we agree on.
  • A “JFDI” attitude and a passion for having a positive impact on others.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • You must be able to treat all people (any race, background, perspective, gender, etc.) with respect.
  • You must read, understand, and agree to our values and Playground Rules.
  • Everyone at Cowork Frederick brings their own computers, so you’ll need to bring a laptop you can use for your work. We’ll give you access to our network, software, and work files you need.

Tools You’ll Use

You’ll use a number of software tools in this role. Familiarity with these tools is a plus, but is not required.

  • Canva
  • Mailchimp
  • MS Word and Google Docs
  • Slack
  • WordPress
  • Socialbee
  • Various social media platforms (Facebook events and ads, Instagram Reels, Twitter, etc.)

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly wage. $20/hr for 15-20 hours per week.
  • Signing Bonus. We want to help while you’re waiting on your first paycheck, so you will receive a signing bonus of $250. IMPORTANT: If your employment ends, for any reason, less than 60 days after your start date, that signing bonus will be deducted from your last paycheck.
  • Cowork Frederick membership. Your job comes with a full-time membership. Become. Succeed. Grow into who you want to be, doing your own thing, while doing your part-time work for us.
  • Education Allowance. In addition to your hourly wage, you will have a $2000 annual allowance to help you learn and grow. You decide how to best spend it – on a conference, online training, books, or consultation, for example. Bring your proposal to us and if it all looks good, we’ll foot the bill.
